Thuraya prepaid SIM cards expire if they are not recharged with sufficient credit. This page explains how this works for the common Thuraya SIM cards.
All Thuraya SIM cards except the ECO SIM have an annual fee. This fee is automatically deducted by Thuraya from your prepaid account balance on the anniversary of the activation of your SIM card. The amount of the fee depends on usage:
| Usage per Year | Annual Renewal Fee |
| More than 1500 units | Free |
| Less than 1500 units | 39 Units |
If you don't have enough credit in your Thuraya prepaid account to pay the fee, then your SIM card will enter a 90 day grace period where you can receive calls, but not make outgoing calls. After this time it will expire. Here is some information about what happens when your Thuraya SIM card expires and if you can reactivate it.
ECO SIM cards are valid for 30 days after initialisation on the Thuraya network. To extend the validity of your SIM card you need to recharge it. The larger the refill amount, the longer the extension to the SIM card validity as this table explains:
| Refill amount | Validity Extension |
| 10 Units | 15 Days |
| 20 Units | 30 Days |
| 39 Units | 2 Months |
| 50 Units | 3 Months |
| 80 Units | 5 Months |
| 160 Units | 12 Months |
For example, to make your SIM card be valid for a whole 12 months, you need to buy a 160 unit refill. You still get to use the 160 units to make calls. Buying 2 x 80 units and 1 x 39 units will also give you 12 months, but it's not as economical.
The validity of a SIM card at any time is 18 months. For example if you recharge with 2 x 160 unit refills at the same time, it will only give you 18 months and not 24 months. If after 1 year you recharge with another 160 unit refill, you will keep your SIM card valid for another 12 months from this refill.
